Self-Unloading Conversion
Scope of Work:
A bulk carrier underwent a significant conversion to become a self-unloading vessel for shallow waters. The scope of work included:
- Wheelhouse replacement with updated navigation and control system
- Installation of new main engines
- Propulsion system modifications (new aft thrusters)
- Tank bottom modifications and discharge gates to accommodate new operational requirements. Tank top closure blocks.
- Modification and expansion of the self-unloading system with 5 conveyor systems for cargo transfer
- Addition of a new loading system with hatch, hopper, conveyor and housing blocks.
Buoyanseas Role:
We were engaged to provide site supervision during the shipyard phase of the conversion. Our focus was on monitoring production quality and ensuring that the design intent was properly understood and implemented by the yard’s production teams. We worked along with the yard on adapting the production design and plan with the owner equipment delivered requirements, coordinating purchasing and logistics of them. We collaborated with the yard’s supervision staff to address technical challenges as they arose, facilitating communication between the design office and the production floor.
Outcome: The vessel was delivered with its expanded self-unloading and loading systems fully operational. The conversion allowed the owner to significantly increase discharge efficiency and operational flexibility. Our role ensured that the production phase progressed with minimal rework and that the final installation matched the approved design specifications.
